You and the Subject of EQ

In an effort to serve my fellow HR professionals, I will be working with and providing information on monthly themes. The themes reflect the real-time work I am doing with clients.

This month's theme is Emotional Intelligence (or know as EQ or EI). I will be doing a full staff training (for both managers and non-managers) for a client in New York and many of the posts this month will be derived from that preparation, workshops, and coaching I've done across the country on this topic over the past many years.

My goal both here and in the workshops I do is to make EQ approachable, practical and less academic (not every seminar on the topic out there does that).

If you want to follow the posts, you can:
1. Subscribe to this blog
2. Access it via The 1% Edge Portable Coach App under the HR Tab
3. Follow the post on Twitter under this exact hash tag combination #EQ-#EI

Additionally, if you want a jump start - here is the link to the EQ Resource Page on my website.

Why Should You Care?
Well...not only are there personal benefits from the knowledge and development of EQ. It is my observation and deepest conviction that the #1 reason for most relationship and performance challenges in the workplace are related to the lack of emotional intelligence at every level.

If that is remotely true - then every HR professional needs to proficient in their knowledge of and dealing with the subject of EQ and the issues surrounding it.  These blog posts and other recommend resources can serve to help you be the needed internal consultant that is sorely needed in most organizations in this area.

Additionally, the lack of EQ in an organization is costly and over the next month I'll be sharing information regarding the quantitative element that adversely impacts a company's bottom line; conversely higher EQ is profitable.  Consider the following information taken from a study entitled, A Business Case For Emotional Intelligence. You can download the information here.

If you want to be a serious learner (as clearly I recommend you become) here is the best place to start: 2 books written by someone well known on the subject with a significant impact in the business community - Daniel Goleman.

Book rec. #1 - Emotional Intelligence and his follow-up book related to corporate application - Book rec #2  - Working With Emotional Intelligence

Additionally I recommend you take a EQ test yourself - here is a resource for that as well: Book rec #3 - The Quickbook to Emotional Intelligence
