Would You Quit After 1 Week?

Editor's Comments: I read this news post and said, "Wow! Would I do that?" It stirred up all sort of questions like:
  • Would I quit after 1 week?
  • Should she have given it more time?
  • Was she wise in seeing that the challenges were just too much - not fixable?
  • Was she thinking addressing these issues would take over my life?
  • Was it fair to the group to quit so soon?

All in all, I think it took guts to quit quickly...what do you think? I would love to hear your view as a fellow HR professional.

County’s HR director quits during first week on job

Geiger reports Ferguson felt she wasn’t person to resolve current concerns

Lindsay Ferguson was hired as the part-time director in January, her first day was Monday, and she quit Friday morning, said Grundy County Board Chairman Ron Severson.

Ferguson came to the county with six years experience in human resources at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. The county’s previous HR director, Denise Kasper, resigned from the position in November with one day notice. She said then she was taking another job.

Personnel Committee Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said Ferguson called her Friday morning to resign.
“She was in a lot of meetings this week . . . we have a lot of severe issues and concerns going on in the county right now and she felt she might not be the best person to get us to a resolution on these issues,” said Geiger.

Geiger said she had received compliments about Ferguson all week that she was a good fit for the county, but added she appreciated Ferguson’s honesty so that the county could find someone qualified to handle the county’s controversial issues occurring recently.

The Personnel Committee will be revisiting the other applications it has received for the position, and Geiger said she hopes the county will have the situation resolved by the end of next week.
The severe issues Geiger is referring to include the county looking into county departments giving unapproved bonuses. Although not illegal, Severson has said the county will be changing procedures so this doesn’t happen again.

  1. There is not enough information to draw any conclusions about this HR directors decisions. Was she impulsive or smart in her decision--who knows?

Could Ferguson have discussed the situation with the county leadership and tried to find solutions together? Would an outside consultant have helped? We don't know.

Perhaps Ferguson assessed the entrenched political-power structures and knew that "resistance is futile" and wasn't willing to take that on and suffer the consequences.

Again, was Ferguson impulsive or smart and gutsy? There is no way of knowing without more facts.

    1. Good questions Alan - my thought also turns to how much exploration of the needs of the position was made before the job offer was accepted. I think it's a useful lesson, so I've out to her for a comment and/or interview.
